PETER GIBSON

Elder

Born in Toronto into a home where his parents were new Christians, Peter  was actively involved in a conservative Bible-centered church culture even at a young age. Having accepted Christ as his Saviour, he was able to navigate the expectations of the son of a church leader, spending most of his time in music, sports, and high-horsepower toys. During his university years, however, his duplicitous lifestyle maxxed out and he came to the realization that his faith was second hand as he had not owned it. The ‘crucible’ came when the Spirit of God brought him, broken, to a place of confession, repentance, and acknowledgement of Christ’s lordship in his life as a revival swept through his church and the Scriptures (especially the book of Romans) took on renewed meaning. Subsequently a near-fatal motorcycle accident left the indelible imprint of God’s hand upon his life. Going through the motions of ‘higher learning’, he had studied literature, philosophy, and education in search of the transcendent but was now self-directed to learn as much from God’s Word as he could grasp in a short time. He entered the educational arena as a secondary school teacher/counsellor but, after ten years, he left to assume ownership of a transportation company only to later respond to God’s call as Associate Director of MBC. After a tenure of service involving conference ministry and Christian school education, Peter completed graduate/postgraduate studies in theology, education, and religious studies then took a short road back into public education where he continues to work as a high school administrator.

Active in his faith communities, Peter has served in churches as a youth leader, adult teacher, worship leader, CE overseer, deacon, and elder. Other ministry venues have included: worship bands; board responsibilities with missions, Tyndale College & Seminary, and MBC; leading group/individual Bible studies; speaking/distributing Bibles to OHL Jr “A” hockey teams; and mentorship. He is blessed with a godly life partner in Beth (who is also involved in teaching/mentoring) and children Breanne (Nashville), Mariah (Muskoka), and Jon (Muskoka). Peter’s recent interests have included music, sports, boating, motorcycles, and muscle car restoration .

As a leader at Harvest Church, Peter is reminded daily of the Christlike example required of him – to cultivate and grow his spiritual capacity through prayer and study of Scripture, to introduce others to Christ, to equip them to live then serve, and to encourage them to replicate such in others. His desire is to love God more, know God deeper, and serve God better through spiritual discipline, seeking the “whole counsel” of God, and promoting transformed lives into transformed community so that Harvest Church is a place where God’s people live for God’s glory.

“This is a trustworthy saying, deserving full acceptance, that Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost.”
(1 Timothy 1:15)

“For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed for I know whom I have believed and am convinced that He is able to guard that which I have entrusted to Him until that day.”
(2 Timothy 1:12)
